Professional Communication
Professional Communication
Whether you want to improve your speech clarity or need help preparing for your big presentation, a speech pathologist can help! We also provide accent modification services for people who feel their accents are a barrier to communicating effectively.
Our Services
-
Your professional communication assessment will include a detailed case history, exam of face/mouth muscles, a speech sample, and an oral reading sample. Therapy goals are set collaboratively based on your clinician’s recommendations and your own personal goals.
-
It is our philosophy that accents are not a problem that needs to be fixed. However, if you feel that your accent is making it difficult for you to communicate effectively with coworkers and/or clients, we are happy to help.
Accent modification therapy begins with identifying which specific speech sounds are making your speech difficult to understand. These speech sounds are called “phonemes”, and every language is made up of a different set, which is why you may have difficulty producing some English sounds. You will practice identifying and making these sounds in therapy.
-
People may have difficulty understanding your speech for a variety of reasons. Some of us talk to fast, sometimes we “mumble”, or we can “slur” our words together. Your clinician will identify what the primary reasons why your speech is lacking clarity and will help you improve your speech clarity with strategies and practice.
-
Other things a Speech Language Pathologist can help you with include:
concise communication
proper breathing technique
healthy speaking technique
increase/decrease volume of speech
reduction of ‘filler words’ (um, uh etc.)

FAQs

You don’t! Every single person technically has an accent, you just may live in an area where most people have an accent that is different from yours. We do not encourage modifying your accent unless you feel like your accent is a barrier to achieving your career or personal goals.

This is a common question for a reason! You may think that a Speech Language Pathologist would be great at helping you learn to speak English, however, SLPs are not trained to teach languages. We can help with certain parts of learning a language, such as proper pronunciation, but you would generally be better served by a certified Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) teacher.
